Mika Brzezinski Fights Tears as Co-Hosts Report on Missing Mom of ‘Dear Friend’ Savannah Guthrie

Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski grew visibly emotional and fought back tears as co-hosts reported on the suspected abduction of Nancy Guthrie, the elderly mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, who host Joe Scarborough noted was a “dear friend” to several of the crew.

The 84-year-old was last seen at her home outside Tucson late on Saturday evening, one day before her family reported her missing. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told CBS News on Monday that the scene at the property raised immediate alarm and that authorities “believe she was abducted.” Although the police did not detail the scene to the press, sources told the Los Angeles Times that blood and signs of forced entry were discovered at the woman’s home.

Homicide detectives were called to the home, a step Nanos said was not standard in missing persons cases, and the FBI is now assisting the investigation as extensive search efforts have begun.

Covering the news on Tuesday’s Morning Joe with Willie Geist, Brzezinski noted several major developing stories at the moment before Scarborough took over, beginning: “And, of course, the one that hits you and Willie and me most obviously has to do with Savannah and her mom, Savannah’s family.”

As her husband spoke, Brzezinski dried her eyes with a tissue. Savannah Guthrie is co-host of NBC’s TODAY.

He continued: “She’s a dear friend of all of ours. And I know Willie has worked with her even more, but, you know, she’s been a friend of ours for, well, since the show began. She was on the show regularly, and Willie, it’s just crushing news.”

He added: “And we pray, and we’ve been praying without ceasing for her safe return. And I can tell you, that’s all Savannah is asking for right now is prayer. She’s, as you both know, she’s very proud of her faith.”

Scarborough revealed that Guthrie’s mother “didn’t show up for church on Sunday,” which raised initial alarm.

“This is beyond unthinkable,” he said.

“Shocking doesn’t do it justice,” Geist replied, noting that he had met Nancy Guthrie several times when working with her daughter, urging viewers who pray to do so, for her safe return.

Brzezinski added: “Yeah, there’s no words for what’s happening here, but there are many prayers with us, with Joe, Willie, and me.”

As she continued into the next segment, covering President Donald Trump’s call into Dan Bongino’s show on Monday, Brzezinski choked up and remained clearly distraught.
