Did This Guy Just Get Rejected While Proposing On The Ellen DeGeneres Show?

Ok, kids, we’re going to need your help with this one. In this segment from Ellen DeGeneres‘ talk show, a nice young man surprises his girlfriend by proposing to her on the program.

…Which all seems very sweet and romantic (Or, you know, kind of terrible and embarrassing. Boo, don’t ever do this, ok?) until she tearfully repeats “I can’t, I can’t breathe” and “I’m sorry.”

There is an awkward pause while the man repeats “Jodie, Jodie” and then… a chime? And applause? And Ellen laughing?

What just happened? Did this guy get rejected on national television, or is this some sort of joke?
