Fed Chair Tells Reporter He Would Not Resign If Trump Asked Him To

Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell gave a blunt response to a reporter when asked if he would resign if President-elect Donald Trump asked him to do so.

Powell held press briefing on Thursday following Trump’s victory on Tuesday. The chairman noted during the conference that the election results would have no near-term policy impact on the Federal Reserve.

When asked by Politico’s Victoria Guida whether he would resign if Trump called for it, Powell simply replied, “No.” Powell then noted that the president does not have the power to fire or demote him.

Trump elevated Powell in 2017 to the position of chairman but had a public falling out with him during his first term because Trump believed Powell was not easing monetary policy fast enough. Powell was originally nominated to the Federal Reserve under President Barack Obama back in 2012.

GUIDA: Some of the president-elect’s advisers have suggested that you should resign if he asks you to leave. Would you go?

POWELL: No.

GUIDA: Can you follow up on — Do you think that legally you are not required to leave?

POWELL: No.
