Fox News’ Harris Faulkner Floats Promotion to Senate for Matt Gaetz Moments After He Drops AG Bid Over Underage Sex Scandal

Fox News’ Harris Faulkner floated the possibility of Matt Gaetz being appointed to the U.S. Senate just moments after he dropped his bid to be confirmed as the next U.S. attorney general amidst an underage sex scandal on Thursday.

Gaetz said that he would not be seeking the office on Thursday after President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate him last week.

“I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback – and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1,” wrote Gaetz on X. “I remain fully committed to see that Donald J. Trump is the most successful President in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will Save America.”

On Fox News, Kayleigh McEnany asked Faulkner, her Outnumbered co-host if she thought Gaetz would try to take back the seat in Congress that he resigned from last week.

“[Ron] DeSantis has to appoint, if Michael Waltz, congressman, moves on in his nominated post, if Marco Rubio, senator, moves on in  nominated post, he’s got some positions to work with there in that state. Could it be Matthew Gaetz who then becomes a U.S. senator for an interim in the state of Florida?” she replied.

“That’s an interesting thought,” said McEnany.

Gaetz has been accused of having sex with a high schooler who was 17-years-old at the time of their interaction, as well as paying women to have sex with him. According to CNN’s Paula Reid, Gaetz withdrew after being told that CNN was going to report that the House Ethics Committee had record of a second alleged sexual encounter between Gaetz and the 17-year-old.
