Harris Campaign Comms Director Mocks Trump on Fox News for Being ‘Muzzled’ By ‘His Team’ at Debate

Michael Tyler, the communications director for Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, accused Donald Trump’s team of muzzling him during an interview on Fox News Tuesday morning.

Tyler’s comment comes ahead of Tuesday night’s crucial ABC News debate between the two candidates and was prompted by a question from anchor Bill Hemmer.

“You know, Michael, you saw that New York Times poll that came out the other day. This is one of the the items they were asking. They wanted to know, ‘Do you need to know more about Kamala Harris?’ The numbers are stark. 18 to 29 [year-olds], 53% say yes. Among blacks, 41%, Hispanics, 43[%],” began Hemmer. “And among those who did not vote in 2020, the number’s 48%. So Trump’s going to get up there tonight, he’s going to say ‘Three and a half years. What are you waiting for?’ What is she going to say when that happens?”

“Yeah, listen, I think, well, it remains to be seen what Donald Trump says, obviously his team decided to overrule him and has muzzled him somewhat on the debate stage. But I think regardless of which version of Donald Trump actually shows up on the debate stage, it is an opportunity for the vice president, right? To communicate her vision for where she wants to take this country,” replied Tyler before explaining the Harris campaign’s view of the distinctions between its principal and Trump on a number of issues.

“The things you listed there, I mean Trump has an opportunity to say, ‘What have you been doing for the past three and a half years if you haven’t done it already?'” shot back Hemmer.

Ahead of the debate, the Harris campaign lobbied for both candidates’ microphones to be unmuted at all times. Their position marked a reversal from the Biden campaign’s demand that only the candidate who was asked to respond to a question have their microphone turned on at any given point. The Trump campaign opposed changing the rules to unmute the microphones and ABC ultimately decided to keep the original, agreed-upon rules in place.

Prior to serving as the Harris campaign’s communications director, Tyler worked in the same capacity for the Biden campaign.
