‘Holy Sh*t!’: John Oliver Can’t Believe Congress Is Really Taking Action on NSA

Almost exactly a month after John Oliver traveled to Russia to interview NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, a federal court ruled that the NSA’s bulk data collection program is illegal. Coincidence? Probably.

Following the House passage of USA Freedom Act, which would effectively stop the mass collection of phone records, Oliver opened this Sunday’s Last Week Tonight by exclaiming, “Holy shit! A meaningful bill passing with broad, bipartisan support. It’s like discovering yourself sexually for the first time: ‘I don’t know what this sensation is, but I think I like it and I want it to happen again.'”

But the bill still has to pass the Senate, where it is facing stiff opposition from Republican leadership in the form of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who wants to extend the current program by a couple of months.

“A couple of months? That’s pathetic!” Oliver said. “Asking for more time for no apparent reason is exactly what you do when you know you’re about to be dumped.”
