House Republican Says Congress Should Act Only As a ‘Supportive Board of Directors’ to Implement Whatever Trump Wants

Fox Business host Stuart Varney spoke to a House Republican on Friday about the looming government shutdown and the GOP’s inability to pass a spending bill to keep the government open. Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) slammed some of his Republican colleagues for not going along with President-elect Donald Trump’s demands on Thursday and argued that Congress, a co-equal branch of government, should act as nothing more than a “supportive board of directors” to implement Trump’s agenda.

“Congressman, can you give us any detail about what’s in this new plan that may or may not be voted on early this morning?” Varney began to start the interview.

“Sure, Stuart. Hey, great to be with you. You know, just to back up a little bit, I mean, the entire problem began because we received almost 1500 pages on Tuesday evening and there was a lot that was in it that was unexpected. And there were things that were not in it that were expected, apparently particularly the president’s request for a debt ceiling. Now, we’re here at the 11th hour,” Meuser replied, adding:

There’s a couple of options on the table. But I think we can make it real simple. The president was elected by the people. What was on the ballot was the America first agenda. The president’s plan is what we should be backing. We should be looking to enhance it, support it, not change it, not alter it, not add to it to enhance it.

If we can make it better from an efficiency standpoint, from a growth standpoint in the short term, which includes a debt ceiling and how our members, particularly Republicans, are not getting on board with what the president’s first step is, day one hasn’t happened yet, but this is a first step. So we can start out of the gate strong is just it’s just wrong at this point.

“But yeah, but you’re split. I mean, House Republicans are split and you can’t pass a government funding bill. That’s the regrettable situation that you find yourselves in at this moment. And that’s bad news for next year because without a debt ceiling, Chuck Schumer is going to exploit the situation dramatically,” noted Varney in return.

“Well, the American people, this is what DOGE did, by the way, DOGE exposed what was in that bill. Right. But that’s why the Democrats are so afraid of Elon Musk and Vivek, because he’s he’s pulling the curtain back. He really showed what was in there, that pay raise. That was a surprise to me, let alone to to my constituents,” Meuser replied, adding:

You know, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, all that other nonsense in a CR that was supposed to just have this disaster funding and economic assistance for farmers. All right. So they added the garbage, we will remove the garbage. Republicans need to get on board with President Trump. He is the commander-in-chief. He is the president. He is the decider in chief and he’s the CEO.

You know, our role is really to be more of a supportive board of directors so we can implement what the American people voted for. And my colleagues need to appreciate that or there’s going to be trouble, then we won’t be able to deliver and we’ll lose over time. Most importantly, the American people’s will. So I think we’re going to get this, but we got to wake up, woke down, which is certainly happening, and and pass something, pass a short-term CR with the debt ceiling attached to it. Pass a bill similar to yesterday’s, but with any revisions that the White House can live with, that President Trump can live with, because, again, this is his plan that should be implemented.

Many Republicans on Capitol Hill have expressed frustration at Musk for weighing in at the last minute to kill the bipartisan deal to avoid a shutdown. Musk in turn has threatened to fund primary challenges to any Republican members who vote against his will.
