House Republican Suggests a Cabal Tried to ‘Silence’ Trump: ‘Now They Tried to Kill Him’

Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) suggested during an interview that former President Donald Trump’s attempted assassination was a part of a wider conspiracy to try “to kill him.”

Twenty-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks shot Trump in the ear at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. One rally-goer was killed and two others were wounded. Crooks was a registered Republican who donated $15 on a Democratic fundraising website. According to the FBI, Crooks searched for upcoming public appearances by Trump and President Joe Biden.

During a Thursday interview with Fox Business anchor Stuart Varney, Mills insinuated the shooter was part of a broader effort to stop Trump:

MILLS: So, you know, I just want to look at this from a completely open perspective. I don’t take anything off the table, but, you know, they tried to silence him, they tried to imprison him. And now they tried to kill him.

VARNEY: He was a meddlesome priest, is what he was called.

Mills: That’s right.

VARNEY: …Just precise language there.

The quote cited is often attributed to King Henry II of England while discussing Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket, who was eventually murdered in 1170.
