Jay Leno’s Low Blow: Hits At Letterman’s Wife
Is Jay Leno not satisfied with how despised he is right now? The former — and soon-to-be — Tonight Show host been taking hits from arch-rival David Letterman, sure — but did he have to go after Letterman’s wife?
Here’s what he said last night:
“Letterman has been hammering me every night. Going after me … Hey Kev, you know the best way to get Letterman to ignore you? Marry him. He will not bother you. He won’t look you in the eye.”
In October, after David Letterman revealed that he had had a string of affairs with female employees at his program, reports were widespread that his wife, Regina Lasko, had been crushed. Letterman himself apologized to her not once but twice on the air, saying that she had been “horribly hurt.” It doesn’t take a genius to know that that’s a low, mean blow.
NB: Leno’s joke about guest James Cameron‘s potential sequel to Avatar, saying it was due in 126 years — about the same time as NBC figured out its late-night schedule, was exceptionally disingenuous, given that Leno is widely assumed to already have a new deal with NBC and had to have known Conan’s ouster was imminent. Leno has been mostly silent on Conan, but ’10 at 10′ guest Arsenio Hall took a swipe: “I wish they paid me $40 million to stay at home.”
