Joe Scarborough Mocks ‘Embarrassing’ GOP Senators for Fauci Hearing ‘Clown Show’

Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough trashed Republican senators for engaging in “sheer political theater” at Dr. Anthony Fauci’s hearing, mocked lawmakers for “embarrassing” bouts of cursing and general line of approach while lamenting real questions left unasked.

The former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday after being subpoenaed to discuss the government’s pandemic response.

During the hearing, Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights dozens of times and declined to answer lawmakers’ questions, as Republicans on the panel grew increasingly irate.

At one stage Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) dropped an f-bomb in an explosive tirade at Fauci while another, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), reduced himself to asking mundane questions in a bid to break the witness’s refusal to answer.

Admitting he hadn’t watched the hearing in full, Scarborough unloaded Thursday on what he called a “show trial” and slammed Republican senators for both their behavior.

“I mean, the Fauci thing, just sheer political theater. They shamed themselves. We Americans needed answers yesterday, we needed answers on the origins of this, the best information they had, the thinking about closing down schools, the thinking about all these other things,” he began.

He continued saying that the hearing was a chance for an “open conversation” but had begun on the wrong footing: “You start with your chairman [Sen. Rand Paul] saying, ‘I’m going to put him behind bars’? Yeah, what you’re doing is you’re staging nothing but a show trial. And so [Fauci] didn’t play along.”

Some embarrassing performances,” Scarborough went on gesturing to mock senators, “Guys swearing – ‘blah, blah, what the F!’ – and then you had other people you know ‘What’s the color of your tie? What’s the color of the carpet?’”

“It was such a clown show!” the host declared.

Rounding on what he believed should have been asked, Scarborough added: “But we still, here are still open questions on the origins of this virus.”

Giving an example he argued questions to Fauci about what informed the decision to “close down schools” might have enlightened the public but that “we didn’t get a chance to hear that yesterday.”

“The entire hearing was framed with ‘I’m going to put the guy who’s testifying here behind bars,’” the host finished.
