Lewis Black Roasts Black Friday Coverage: ‘It’s Like Sharia Law for Capitalism!’

Comedian Lewis Black returned to The Daily Show Wednesday night to talk about the looming disaster known as Black Friday. Specifically, Black took on Fox and other networks’ breathless coverage of the annual post-Thanksgiving shopping spree.

On the one hand, TV anchors and commentators think that starting Black Friday on Thanksgiving Day, as some retailers have started to do, should be “illegal.” But then when companies like Costco decided to give all of its workers a full day off on Thanksgiving, that is a bridge too far.

Even worse are malls that are taxing stores for closing on Thanksgiving. “That’s the most anti-American thing I’ve ever heard!” Black exclaimed. “It’s like Sharia law for capitalism!”

“So, let me get this straight: You can’t make a store open on Thanksgiving — it’s just a poor, helpless corporation — but people? ‘Punch in and shut the fuck up! You can see your family in January!'”
