Madison DA to Announce Whether He’ll Charge Cop for Killing Unarmed Man
A Wisconsin district attorney will soon announce whether he will bring charges against a white police officer who shot a mixed-race man in his own home, a case that’s ratcheted up tension in the city of Madison.
In March, Madison police officer Matt Kenney shot and killed 19-year-old Tony Robinson after hearing reports that Robinson had “been jumping in front of cars and assaulting people,” according to CNN. While Kenney claims that Robinson attacked him, Robinson’s family disputes that claim, though they did acknowledge that Robinson had ingested hallucinogenic mushrooms earlier that day.
The District Attorney’s investigation is mandated by Wisconsin state law for officer-involved shootings and death.
The Madison Police Department told CNN that they were prepared for whatever outcome occurs, hoping that the community would “come through these challenging days ahead without violence or property damage,” and added that they met with community leaders in advance of today’s announcement.
