Matt Lauer Asks GM CEO if She Can Run Company and Still Be Good Mom

In a question no doubt asked of every male guest on the Today show, cohost Matt Lauer asked General Motors CEO Mary Barra if her chief executive duties got in the way of her parental ones.

“You said in an interview not long ago that your kids said they’re going to hold you accountable for one job, and that is being a mom,” he asked. “Given the pressure at General Motors, can you do both well?”

“I think I can,” she replied. “I have a great team…and I have a wonderful family and a supportive husband, and I’m pretty proud of my kids the way they’re supporting me in this.”

Lauer also wondered if despite her qualifications Barra had been selected for the CEO position because “as a woman and as a mom” she would present a “softer face” for the company that knew it was in for rough treading. She didn’t think so.
