Nicolle Wallace on Trump Invoking John Kelly’s Son: Is ‘Anything Sacred’ Anymore?

At the top of her MSNBC program this afternoon, Deadline: White House host Nicolle Wallace weighed in on President Donald Trump claiming his predecessor didn’t call the families of fallen soldiers. After receiving backlash over those comments, Trump told a radio host today that he should ask White House Chief of Staff John Kelly if former President Barack Obama called him after his son died in Afghanistan.

“I started this show one day by saying that the bottom was calling and wanted to know if we were there yet,” Wallace stated. “On day two of the president’s fight over how his predecessors handled the most solemn of presidential responsibilities — the call to families of the men and women who give their lives to protect America — it feels like the right time to re-up the question, ‘Is anything sacred?'”

The former Republican strategist went on to play a series of clips when it appeared that Trump had reached the bottom, such as him saying John McCain wasn’t a war hero and the infamous Access Hollywood tape.

After playing video of the president calling for NFL owners to fire any player that protests during the national anthem, Wallace noted that “there’s always a lower rung from which to swing” before playing airing a clip of Trump invoking Kelly’s deceased son.

Wallace highlighted that the White House provided a “carefully worded statement” claiming Obama didn’t call Kelly, noting that representatives of Obama and former President George W. Bush have shot back to debunk claims they never called victims’ families. Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Kelly sat with Obama at a Gold Star family breakfast in 2011.
