NY Republican Mayoral Candidate Wants Trump To Stay Away From Packed Race
New York Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa wants President Donald Trump to stay out of the election, arguing it will only boost Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Sliwa joined Fox 5’s Morgan McKay on Politics Unusual this week where he admitted that he and Trump have had a “love hate relationship” as reports indicate the president is seriously considering getting more involved in New York’s packed mayoral race. Besides Sliwa and Mamdani, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo are also running.
According to a New York Times report this week, Trump has held private discussions about the best to candidate to face Mamdani and he recently spoke with Cuomo.
McKay asked Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels group, if he’s spoken to Trump or whether he’d accept an endorsement.
“I would just say to the president, spend your time where it’s needed more, on geopolitical interests that affect all Americans. This election in New York City does not affect all Americans,” Sliwa said after revealing he has not spoken to the president.
“When you heard this news, did you believe it? Were you kind of hurt a little bit that he maybe called Cuomo and not you? Would you wish he would have called you?” McKay asked, referring to reports of the Trump/Cuomo conversation.
“No, come on, let’s face it. Cuomo’s been talking to Trump for years. They grew up together, side by side. Fred, the patriarch of the Trump family, supported Mario Cuomo. I get that,” Sliwa said.
Trump getting more involved and backing any candidate, Sliwa added, would make center debate around Trump versus Mamdani. Sliwa argued Trump does not have the “support” in New York that he does in other parts of the country.
“In this situation, it doesn’t help if he intervenes in New York City,” he said. “Every day it’s Trump versus Zohran Mamdani, it’s a good day for Zohran Mamdani. Every day that Cuomo and Adams talks about you, ‘you drop out, you job out,’ it’s a good day for Zohran Mamdani. I talk the issues.”
