Oscar 2010 Best Picture: Hurt Locker!
And just like that — literally, because Tom Hanks read out the winner with absolutely no preamble or fanfare — it was official: The Hurt Locker was the Best Picture of 2009, as decreed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Kathryn Bigelow had already made history as the first female Best Director for a tough, passionate film that was hailed as real, unflinching look at the Iraq war by some even if not by others; journalist Mark Boal had already won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay; the film had already picked up technical honors in editing, sound mixing and sound editing. Ah well. James Cameron can always go and count his money. Despite the criticism the film has received from some vets, Bigelow and Boal once again made a point of honoring the brave men and women serving the country in the military overseas and paying tribute to the job they do.
