Rep.-Elect Mia Love Stands Behind Scalise over David Duke Connection

Representative-elect Mia Love (R-UT) told ABC News Sunday morning that she stands behind incoming GOP Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), who has been under fire following revelations that he spoke at an event in 2002 that was at least somewhat affiliated with white supremacist David Duke.

“I believe he should remain in leadership,” said Love, the GOP’s first black female lawmaker. “There’s one quality that he has that is very important in leadership, and that’s humility. He’s actually shown that in this case. He’s apologized, and I think we need to move on and get the work of the American people done.”

Scalise has received the support of his fellow GOP leaders, even as some have called the issue a distraction just as the GOP was set to begin pushing its agenda.

“This was twelve years ago,” she said to that. “It’s interesting that it’s coming out now.”

“These groups are awful,” Love continued. “The last thing I want to do is give them any sort of publicity or credibility. As far as I’m concerned with Representative Scalise, he has been absolutely wonderful to work with, he’s been very helpful for me, and he has had the support of his colleagues.”
