Rep. Rashida Tlaib Doubles Down on Rep. Meadows Comments: It Was a Racist Act

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) has zero regrets about her dispute with Mark Meadows (R-NC) at the end of the House Oversight Committee hearing for Michael Cohen.

Meadows raised eyebrows in the Cohen hearing by inviting Housing and Urban Development official and longtime Donald Trump staffer Lynne Patton to the proceedings. He did so for the purpose of refuting Cohen’s claims about the president’s racism, and the hearing plunged into chaos when Tlaib called Meadows out for his “racist act” of using an African American woman as a political “prop.”

Alisyn Camerota asked Tlaib about the commotion in an interview for CNN, and the congresswoman reiterated that Meadows’ act was “insensitive” and “if we want to talk about race in this country, that was not the way do it.” Tlaib was also asked for her thoughts on how Patton is defending Meadows and pushing back on the idea she was there as a “prop”

Tlaib said she meant “no disrespect” to Patton but Meadows’ ploy was not the right way to hold a conversation on Trump’s racist rhetoric and behavior. When asked why she apologized to Meadows for insinuating he’s a racist personally, Tlaib explained that “it was important for me to speak truth to power,” and it was a teachable moment about his “very hurtful and very painful” actions.

The conversation continued by focusing on Meadows’ resurfaced, racially-charged birther comments about former president Barack Obama. When asked if she still thinks Meadows isn’t racist, Tlaib said “I feel like the act was. That’s up to the American people to decide whether or not he is.”
