Republican Senator Repeatedly Mistakes Female D.C. Mayor for a Man: ‘He Knows Exactly What’s Happening!’
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) repeatedly referred to female Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser with male pronouns during a Fox News interview on Wednesday.
During the appearance, Mullin used male pronouns in reference to Bowser a whopping four times, seemingly unaware that the D.C. mayor was a woman and not a man.
“The left media and the leaders in Washington, D.C., especially – and I will say this – the very racist mayor, and people may get eyebrows when I raise that, but he’s the one that brings in race into the conversation,” protested Mullin. “So he’s the one that’s pointing the fingers at it, and when you point one finger, you got three pointing right back at you.”
The senator continued, “But for him to say that and flat out lie to the American people, he knows exactly what’s happening. Crime is not down. The lack of prosecution is down. They don’t allow the prosecuting attorneys to actually prosecute. They have taken all the felonies and they drop them down to dang-near misdemeanors, and they don’t even write the tickets on them. Violations don’t even exist in Washington, D.C.”
Mullin received ridicule and criticism on social media over the mistake.
“If you’re going to smear the mayor of DC with falsehoods, at least give the audience the impression that you know who SHE is,” reacted NYU Law Professor Ryan Goodman.
Several users suggested that the senator appeared to be confusing the D.C. mayor with the mayor of Baltimore, Brandon Scott, who is a biological male.
During the same appearance on Fox News, Wednesday, Mullin claimed he no longer wears his seatbelt in D.C. for fear of being carjacked.
“I don’t buckle up. And the reason why I don’t buckle up, and people can say whatever they want to, they can raise their eyebrows at me, again, is because of carjacking,” he said. “I don’t wanna be stuck in my vehicle when I need to exit in a hurry because I got a seat belt around me.”
