SNL’s Bill Hader Explains The Genius Behind His ‘Stefon’ Character

If you’ve watched Saturday Night Live at all in the last several years, you likely know one of the show’s most popular recurring characters: the flamboyant, club-hopping New Yorker named Stefon, played by Bill Hader.

Stefon’s shtick generally consists of rattling off the “hottest” clubs or NYC tourist destinations to visit during a particular season, usually with strange and oftentimes hilarious names to mock the city’s ostentatious club scene as a whole. In an interview with Grantland‘s Bill Simmons, Hader explained how Stefon came to be, and how the ridiculous destination ideas come about.

Not surprisingly, the creative process behind Stefon requires lots of re-writes, brainstorming, and blurting out of random phrases until you find the funniest one.
