Target Tells Open Carriers to Leave the Guns Outside
On Wednesday, Target became the latest national chain to ask open carriers not to bring in their firearms.
In a statement on the very unfortunately named “A Bullseye View,” Target said, “Our approach has always been to follow local laws, and of course, we will continue to do so. But starting today we will also respectfully request that guests not bring firearms to Target—even in communities where it is permitted by law.”

The battle started after open carriers posted pictures to social media of themselves brandishing assault rifles in stores, causing the advocacy group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America to begin protesting the stores. A source speculated to Mother Jones that these protests, coming so soon after Target’s data breach debacle last fall, forced the chain’s hand.
Target’s announcement follows similar ones from Starbuck’s, Chipotle, Sonic, and more, especially after some incidents involving open carry protesters led even the NRA to tell them to dial it back a bit. (The NRA later recanted.)
