Trump Threatens ‘Communist’ Mamdani as Netanyahu Rejects ‘Silly’ Threat to Arrest Him
President Donald Trump branded Zohran Mamdani a “communist” after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the Democratic New York City mayoral nominee’s “silly” threat to have him arrested if he ever visits the Big Apple.
The diplomatic jab came in response to comments Mamdani made last December with Zeteo editor-in-chief Mehdi Hasan, in which he pledged, if elected, to deliver on the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu and take the Israeli leader into custody should he visit New York City.
“No. As mayor, New York City would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu,” Mamdani said at the time. “This is a city that our values are in line with international law. It’s time that our actions are also.”
Talking to the press in the White House’s Blue Room while visiting Trump on Monday, Netanyahu addressed the comments: “No, no, I’m not concerned about that. Look, there’s enough craziness in the world, but I guess it never ends. I mean, you have, this is falling, and it’s, you know, it’s silly in many ways, because it’s just not serious.”
Trump joined in: “We don’t know who the mayor is going to be yet, but this is a communist. He’s not a socialist, he’s a communist and he’s said some really bad things about Jewish people and he said some real bad things about a lot of people.”
He added: “I think he’s going through a little bit of a honeymoon right now, but he might make it. But, you know, it all comes through the White House. He needs the money. He needs a lot.”
Trump then warned the Democratic mayoral candidate: “He’s going to behave. He’ll behave. He better behave. Otherwise, he’s going to have big problems.”
A vocal progressive, Mamdani’s shock primary victory comes as the Democratic Party attempts to rebuild its image following the 2024 presidential election defeat. During the campaign his past comments on Israel and support for the Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS) movement became a hot point of focus for liberals and conservatives.
