Trump Walks Back Remark About Serving ‘Three Times or Four Times’ at Vegas Rally

President Donald Trump backtracked after saying at a Saturday victory rally in Las Vegas he could serve three or four terms in the White House.

The president told a crowd of supporters that he made the comment in order to troll “the fake news.”

Trump said the country would become a meritocracy under his leadership after speaking at length about legislation to end taxes for tipped employees. He then spoke about his plans for the next four years.

“It will be the greatest honor of my life to serve. Not once, but twice – or three times or four times,” he said to applause. “No. Headlines. Headlines for the fake news. No, it will be to serve twice. For the next four years, I will not rest.”

Trump added, “I will not yield. And together, we will not fail. We will win, win, win. We will bring back the American dream. We’re going to bring it back. You know, in recent years, our nation has suffered greatly. But we are going to make it great again, greater than ever before.”

The remark came days after a House Republican drafted a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow Trump to serve additional terms if it were to become ratified.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) announced a long-shot amendment Thursday that would apply to Trump and no other living former president, given he is serving a non-consecutive second term. The proposal reads in part:

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.
