Viktor Orbán Wants to Hire Karoline Leavitt After She Rages at Reporter
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt became the unexpected centrepiece of a bilateral meeting on Friday after President Donald Trump appeared momentarily flustered in front of cameras and called out for her mid-question – before Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán jokingly made a play to hire her.
Trump, irritated by a question from a reporter on affordability, turned from the front row to the back of the Oval Office in a slight panic.
“I’d like to ask Karoline. Where’s Karoline?” he said, looking around. “I’d like to ask Karoline a question. Where is she? Did she – uh oh, she deserted us.”
Laughter filled the room as Trump declared his “great superstar Karoline deserted” him, only to note seconds later that she was “right outside.” When Leavitt returned, she went on the offensive. Trump had labelled the question put to him “fake, disgusting” and accused the journalist involved of pushing “fake news.”
Leavitt then pivoted to Biden-era inflation and, without changing her register, delivered closing arguments on behalf of Trump.
She argued it was “unfortunate that the reporters in this room refuse to address” that Trump “inherited one of the worst inflation prices in modern American history.”
She added, “He signed the largest middle-class tax cut in six months. Affordability is what the American people have elected this president to do, and he is doing it.”
Orbán then cut in to ask Trump if Leavitt might work for him too.
Trump laughed and encouraged it: “Karoline, the prime minister would like for you to work with him in Hungary.”
Orbán urged her to “please consider it.”
Trump then begged her not to go: “Please, don’t leave us, Karoline.”
And then, back to business, the president signalled he may exempt Hungary from Russia oil sanctions.
After the exchange, Leavitt took to X to politely and publicly decline the “kind” offer, telling Orbán she was “staying right here.”
