‘We Failed These Children’: Texas State Senator ‘Disgusted’ by ‘Mistakes’ in Uvalde Shooting Response
Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez (D) bashed law enforcement in Uvalde, TX for their delayed response to the shooting which took place last week at Robb Elementary School.
In an interview on Sunday with CNN’s Dana Bash, Gutierrez said, “the whole thing is a shame,” and added that he was “disgusted” with how the police failed to stop the shooter before Border Patrol took matters into their own hands to neutralize him. The Uvalde Police department has come under massive scrutiny for not moving in faster on the shooter despite multiple 911 calls from the classroom where 19 children and 2 adults were murdered.
“At the end of the day, the protocols were breached. The active shooter protocols dictate that you go in,” Gutierrez. “First, there were seven officers. By 12:03, there were 19 officers. So many things went wrong here.”
Asked whether the delayed response “cost lives,” Gutierrez said he heard from a first responder who said one of the children who died in the massacre perished from blood loss, and “in that span of 30 or 40 minutes extra, that little girl might have lived.”
“So absolutely,” he said. “These mistakes may have led to the passing away of these children as well.”
Gutierrez continued by detailing his conversations about the command structure for the law enforcement response, plus his discussions with Steven McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, who is also facing questions.
“At the end of the day, everybody failed here,” Gutierrez said. “We failed these children. We even failed them in the Texas legislature.”
