WH Press Corps Teams Up to Battle Sanders on Trump’s ‘Get Ready Russia’ Tweet: ‘Does It Mean Anything At All?!’

In what was an unusual moment during Tuesday’s briefing, several members of the White House press corps teamed up in an effort to get some answers from Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on the topic of the FBI raid on President Donald Trump‘s lawyer, Michael Cohen.

Having seen the tactic bear fruit on Tuesday, the press corps tried it again on Wednesday — this time looking for some details on the president’s “Get ready Russia” tweet from Wednesday morning.

Steven Portnoy of CBS News Radio went first:

“Is the president targeting personnel or assets in Syria?” Portnoy asked Sanders. He added, “What does he mean?”

Sanders predictably dodged.

“We’re maintaining that we have a number of options, and all of those options are on the table,” Sanders said. “Final decisions haven’t been made on that front.

Portnoy pressed.

“So does it mean anything at all?!” Portnoy said. “What does it mean?”

“It certainly means — I think there’s a lot there that you can read from,” Sanders said. “But at the same time, the president has a number of options at his disposal, and all of those options remain on the table and we continue to look at each one of them.”

Several reporters picked up the slack for Portnoy after Sanders moved on, in an effort to follow up. The questioning on the topic culminated with ABC’s Jon Karl.

“Why is the president telegraphing his military intentions on Twitter — announcing, effectively, an attack on Twitter?” Karl said.

Sanders repeated the same non-answer she gave Portnoy earlier.

“Again, the president has not laid out a timetable and [is] still leaving a number of other options on the table,” she said. “We’re still considering a number of those, and a final decision hasn’t been made.”
