Wilmore Can’t Believe NYPD Tackled the Wrong Innocent, Famous Black Guy

Larry Wilmore opened The Nightly Show Monday night with the first-ever edition of “Black Tennis Roundup.” But after reporting the news of Serena Williams’ U.S. Open upset, the host realized there was another, perhaps more important story to cover.

Wilmore then aired the video of a plain-clothes NYPD officer tackling tennis star James Blake to the ground because he thought he looked like a suspect in a credit card fraud investigation. But while there didn’t seem to be anything too special about this story at first, Wilmore became outraged when he discovered the man for whom Blake was mistaken was also innocent.

“This cop didn’t even tackle the correct innocent black man?” he asked in disbelief. “Good lord! I mean, c’mon guys, there’s only one rule when you’re targeting black people: Make sure they’re not famous.”
