‘Would You Defy a Court Order?’ Laura Ingraham Questions Trump After His DOJ Ignores Judge’s Injunction
Laura Ingraham repeatedly asked President Donald Trump if he would defy court orders he doesn’t like during an interview that aired on Fox News on Tuesday night.
The Trump administration has faced criticism from Democrats and legal scholars over its response – or lack thereof – to a verbal order issued on Saturday by U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, who told the government to return planes full of Venezuelan migrants to the U.S. The administration claimed the migrants were members of the Tren de Aragua prison gang. But the planes, which were headed for a prison camp in El Salvador, were never told to turn around.
On Monday, Boasberg grilled lawyers for the Department of Justice as to why his order went unheeded. The administration flat-out said it defied the order because it was not in writing.
“An injunction is not ordered until it’s in the written filing,” a DOJ lawyer argued in the hearing.
“That’s a heck of a stretch,” the judge replied.
Trump responded to the episode by calling for Boasberg’s impeachment.
Hours later, the president appeared on Fox News, where Ingraham asked about Chief Justice John Roberts saying that such calls were not “appropriate.” Trump replied by noting that the chief justice did not mention him by name and declined to criticize Roberts, who last year authored a majority opinion that handed Trump a major victory amid the two federal criminal cases against him.
“There hasn’t been a full ruling yet and I know your Justice Department is appealing this on a couple of different grounds,” Ingraham said to Trump. “But this is leading people to wonder whether there are court orders that you will defy because you believe that the judge has no jurisdiction or there are political questions and not justiciable at all. And what would you say to that? Are there circumstances where you would defy a court order?”
The president dodged the question, instead opting to rehash some of his personal grievances with the justice system.
“But going forward, would you?” Ingraham interjected. “Would you defy a court order?”
“I never did defy a court order,” he replied.
“And you wouldn’t in the future?” the host followed up.
“No, you can’t do that,” Trump answered. “However, we have bad judges. We have very bad judges. And these are judges that shouldn’t be allowed. I think at a certain point, you have to start looking at, what do you do when you have a rogue judge? The judge that we’re talking about, he’s– you look at his other rulings, I mean, rulings unrelated, but having to do with me, he’s a lunatic.”
