‘World Class Douchebag’: Adam Carolla Skewers Gavin Newsom for Acting Like He Grew Up Working Class

Adam Carolla is not buying California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Dickensian tale about his rough upbringing in the Bay Area.

No, the veteran comic was disgusted by Newsom’s appearance on the All the Smoke podcast this past weekend, with Carolla on Monday blasting Newsom as an opportunistic chameleon who will say whatever he needs to in order to win people over momentarily.

That was the case on the podcast, Carolla said, where Newsom told ex-NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson about how he grew up “hustling” and was “out there kind of raising myself.” Newsom’s recounting of his supposedly hardscrabble upbringing went a bit viral over the weekend, with one X clip racking up 1.8 million views.

“Kraft macaroni and cheese, that’s how I grew up, bro,” Newsom said, which drew a big laugh from both podcasters.

Carolla said that story does not quite add up.

“You should know his dad was lead counsel for Getty Oil. Getty is like the richest family in the country, maybe in the world… his dad was a judge and a lawyer, and the Gettys were close family friends,” Carolla said, before playing a clip of Newsom’s ATS appearance.

Carolla continued: “And when [Newsom] started his winery at 25, he got the money from the Getty family — just like you and I did when we were 25.”

Newsom grew up in Marin County, California. The city where he went to high school, Larkspur, has a median household income of about $135,000 — 60% higher than the average American household.

After playing the clip of Newsom talking about his budget-friendly binges, Carolla continued mocking Newsom:

Yeah, I’m sure all the guys from the hood, with the Getty family, up in the hizzy… J. Paul Getty was probably coming up like ‘What’s up? Word up, my homies. Come on, my shizzle. Shizzle my nizzle, where’s your hot sauce, homies?’

The ex-Loveline co-host then started talking about a semi-viral picture of a young Newsom wearing a scarf and looking fairly dapper from the mid-80s.

“He looks like James Spader from Pretty in Pink! He’s wearing Italian loafers with no socks, his hair is slicked back, he’s calling everyone ‘sport.’ He’s got a scarf,” Carolla joked. “He’s a world class douchebag who has no personality, other than the personality he perceives other people wanting him to have when he’s in the room with them.”

Other standout moments from Newsom’s ATS episode include him saying being “anti-woke” is “just anti-Black.”
