Democratic Senator Hammers AOC and Bernie Sanders: ‘What Have They Actually Done?’
Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) fired a shot across the bow of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and the progressive wing of her party on Wednesday.
During a town hall with constituents, Slotkin was asked by a constituent how she would “step up for us now” like Ocasio-Cortez, Sanders, and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) had with their “screaming, enraged, passionate” response to President Donald Trump.
“Everyone you mentioned has a lot of words, but what have they actually done to change the situation with Donald Trump and the cuts and the attacks on our judiciary and the attacks on our Constitution?” replied Slotkin, who dismissed the idea of chaining herself to the White House and becoming “an activist full time” because she’s busy fighting the Trump administration’s cuts to the federal government.
“All of those things require me to be more than just an AOC,” said Slotkin. “I can’t do what she does because we live in a purple state, and I’m a pragmatist.”
Back in 2019, when Slotkin was serving alongside Ocasio-Cortez and other members of the so-called “Squad” in the House, the junior senator dismissed the idea that she was battling with them for the soul of the party.
“Yeah, so I definitely think there’s an interest by the media in sort of that age-old catfight story, because I noticed they do it more frequently with women members. I think that that helps no one. It doesn’t help the members. It doesn’t help our constituents. It doesn’t help the issues that we’re working on,” argued Slotkin. “So, for me, the Democratic Party is a big tent and everyone’s doing their job to represent their district. And my district is very different than Alexandria’s district, so I don’t fault her for doing what she thinks is right for them. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right for my district.”
