‘Do You Have Another Solution?’ Israeli Ambassador Gives Stunning Response When Interviewer Says She Made Case for ‘Destroying the Whole of Gaza’
Israel’s ambassador to the U.K. offered a shockingly blunt reply when discussing her country’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
In its response to the Oct. 7 terror attacks in which Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis and abducted 240 others, the Israeli military has killed more than 22,000 Gazans, according to officials in the territory. A staggering 85% of Gazans have been displaced.
Speaking on LBC on Wednesday, Tzipi Hotovely – Israel’s ambassador to the U.K. – reiterated her government’s pledge to destroy Hamas, including tunnels in Gaza she said are vital to its operations. Hotovely claimed to host Iain Dale that schools, mosques, and private residences are legitimate targets because they are allegedly connected to the tunnels:
HOTOVELY: Those areas must be destroyed. And one of the things we exposed to the world after getting into the areas in Gaza that we tried to find all those tunnels and underground metro-city that Hamas has built thanks to this great support of Iran, Qatar, the international community, generosity, everything turned to be this horrible terror city. One of the things we realized – that every school, every mosque, every second house has an access to [a] tunnel. So this is– and of course– and ammunition.
DALE: But that’s an argument for destroying the whole of Gaza — every single building in there.
HOTOVELY: So, do you have another solution – how to destroy the underground tunnels city, that this is the place where the terrorists hide, where they have all the ammunition? And this is the rockets that are still fired on Israeli cities.”
Early in the war, Israeli officials ordered residents of northern Gaza to evacuate to the south. Afterward, Israel issued several evacuation orders to those in the south, and has also bombed areas in Gaza after deeming them “safe zones” for civilians. The severity and scope of Israel’s actions in the densely populated area have sparked international outcry, as have remarks from cabinet ministers calling for the resettlement of Palestinians outside of Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government unsuccessfully lobbied Egypt to admit refugees who had been displaced in Gaza. On Wednesday, it was reported that Israel is in talks with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other countries about accepting Gazans. In December, one Israeli newspaper reported that Netanyahu aims to “thin” the population of Gaza.
