‘No Question’: Liz Cheney Convinced Trump Will Refuse to Leave Office if Reelected President

Former congresswoman Liz Cheney believes that if former President Donald Trump wins the 2024 election, he would attempt to stay well beyond the end date of his second term.

In an interview on the Today Show Monday, host Savannah Guthrie asked Cheney about the prospect of Trump trying to stay in office beyond Jan. 20, 2029 — should he win a second term in 2024.

“Do you believe if Donald Trump were elected next year, that he would try to stay in office beyond a second term?” Guthrie asked. “That he would never leave office?”

The former congresswoman was unequivocal.

“There’s no question,” Cheney said.

“You think he would try to stay in power forever?” Guthrie asked.

“Absolutely,” Cheney replied. “He’s already done it once. And in fact, if you look at what he did in the run-up to January 6th, in terms of his pressure on the Vice President not to count legitimate electoral votes, his pressure on the Department of Justice, on state officials, and then refusing to send help when the Capitol was under attack. He’s already attempted to seize power.”

Earlier in the interview, Guthrie asked Cheney to spell out the stakes of the next election.

“You think this a vote about whether or not we still have democracy in this country?” Guthrie asked.

“It certainly is,” Cheney said.
