Rapper Killer Mike Tells Incredible Story of Grammys Arrest Followed By News of New Kidney For His Son
Michael Render, a.k.a. “Killer Mike,” may have won three Grammys, including best rap album, just over a week ago, but it’s what happened afterward that had him reflecting with the co-hosts of The View.
Shortly after winning the awards, the 48-year old Atlanta-based musician was handcuffed and escorted out of the Crypto.com Arena by LAPD officers. He was booked on a “misdemeanor after an alleged physical altercation with a security guard,” according to reports.
Sunny Hostin, a former federal prosecutor, called the show of force “unnecessary,” and said, “you don’t do that on that special night.”
Mike explained as much as he could about the pending legal case, and claimed he had no hard feelings against the authorities.
“I think the backstage was overcrowded. I think the winners were exuberant, and I think security got a little over-zealous, and it’s water under the bridge for me,” he said, continuing:
But, I’d like to say, all of my heroes have been in handcuffs: Malcolm, Martin, Mandela… I walked out with the same dignity and respect that I walked in with, and I would just implore people to just take that from it. Don’t dwell on the bad stuff.
I spent three hours kind of by myself. You know, you’re waiting, and the police said, “Oh my God, we’ve never gotten this many phone calls. People want to go protest, and we’re going to have to move you.” They’re panicked, and I’m just sort of sitting there, and I begin to invoke thanks. I thanked God for bringing me where I was, I thanked God for putting me in a space, believe it or not, by myself, and I got an opportunity to invoke the spirit of my mom and my grandmother and let them know what had happened, and thank them.
Mike said he was released that same night, then woke to some amazing news the next morning.
“I woke up to my son’s mother saying, ‘You have to come home because Pony Boy has a kidney. They have a kidney and we have to get him now,” Mike said of his 21-year old son who had been waiting three years for a life-saving kidney transplant.
“My grandmother told me, the Lord will set you down, and you never know what that means until you’re sat down,” he added. “And then it’s like you in a tuxedo and God, and you’re, like, ‘Well, damn. This is what my grandmother was talking about.'”
