WATCH: Indiana Mayor Apologizes After Repeatedly Calling Out ‘Unvaccinated Assholes’ at Successive Meetings

West Lafayette, Indiana Mayor John Dennis apologized after he made repeated references to “unvaccinated assholes” at a series of official meetings, including one at which he was ostensibly trying to apologize for that very offense.

Mayor Dennis began the week by somewhat hilariously introducing the term at Monday’s city council meeting, musing to the assembled council and citizenry about a note he found in his materials.

“I have a note here that says we will not be closing down the city to protect the asshole unvaccinated. I don’t know who put that in my notes. Probably me. Must have been a temperamental moment,” the mayor said.

He went on to tell the council that “It’s the unvaccinated people that are letting us down. They generally don’t want to wear a mask. They generally, obviously, don’t want to get vaccinated, and generally speaking, they’re in a position to do much more harm than good.”

Two days later, at a Tippecanoe County Health Department briefing, Dennis brought up that comment, apologized for it, then added that it’s pretty much true.

“There are people that still think this is something that we’ve made up. There’s still people who think this is some sort of governmental power trip to try and control the population base,” Dennis said and went on to add “Oddly enough, they still think this is something that is absolutely fabricated and does not have any impact on their life at all, and they could not be more wrong.”

“I lost my temper at a council meeting here recently, and I referenced them as unvaccinated assholes. Unfortunately, that’s sometimes accurate. That’s true,” Dennis said.

The Mayor angered some of those same people, who demanded an apology. On Thursday, Dennis complied, saying his comments were “out of line” and “wrong” and promising it would never happen again.

The flap comes as Dr. Anthony Fauci has ramped up the urgency of his message that unvaccinated, um, persons could spark a mutation that’s worse than the Delta variant, and resistant to the vaccines.
