Another NFL Player Cut After Media Learns of Domestic Violence History

Earlier today, the Arizona Cardinals deactivated running back Jonathan Dwyer after he was arrested yesterday and charged with multiple counts of domestic violence — and, just hours ago, cut his potential replacement, running back Chris Rainey. Guess why they cut him. No, really, guess.

Rainey, a University of Florida grad who’s played for — and was cut from — the Steelers and the Colts, has been arrested and charged twice for domestic violence: The first time as an undergrad, when he pled guilty to stalking his then-girlfriend and sending her a text saying “time to die, bitch”; the second time for slapping his girlfriend, for which he pled no contest to disorderly conduct.

CNN reports that after they asked the Cardinals about Rainey’s record today, he was immediately dropped from the team. “At the time, head coach Bruce Arians told a local paper that he had thoroughly vetted Rainey by talking to people who had played with him before,” they wrote. “One of the people who vouched for him was none other than Jonathan Dwyer. The two played together for the Steelers.”
