Boston Herald Pulls Bombshell Tom Brady Column After Writer Apparently Fooled By Hoax Texts
This is embarrassing.
Boston Herald sports columnist Ron Borges believed that he had an absolute bombshell revolving around New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady. Citing “sources,” Borges wrote that Brady was planning on holding out from the Patriots’ offseason workouts unless he got a big pay raise that was on par with the recent contract Jimmy Garoppolo signed with the San Francisco 49ers. (Garoppolo was once Brady’s backup.)
Only one problem — it looks as if Borges based the premise of his column on hoax texts sent to him purporting to be from Brady’s agent Don Yee.
As NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk noted this morning, the Boston Herald has pulled the column after Boston-area radio station WEEI revealed that one of their listeners was the one who texted Borges.

Regarding the issue with Borges’ sourcing on the piece, the Herald’s sports editor Sean Leahy told Pro Football Talk that they were “looking into it.” Of course, considering that they pulled the column from its website, it would appear that the situation has indeed been looked at.
This isn’t the first time Borges has gotten into hot water over his writing. Back in 2007, he left the Boston Globe after being suspended for two months for plagiarism. The suspension stemmed from Borges’s habit of essentially copying and pasting other reporters’ work for his Sunday column.
