Christine Quinn Apologizes for ‘Unqualified Lesbian’ Remark But Stands By Cynthia Nixon Criticism

Former City Council Speaker and CNN commentator Christine Quinn walked backed remarks she made towards actress/activist and now gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon.

Quinn, who is openly gay, blasted the Sex in the City star for not endorsing her in 2013 in a mayoral race against Bill de Blasio and said the following to the New York Post:

“Cynthia Nixon was opposed to having a qualified lesbian become mayor of New York City. Now she wants to be an unqualified lesbian to be the governor of New York. You have to be qualified and have experience. She isn’t qualified to be the governor.”

After getting blowback, Quinn offered an apology while speaking to Inside City Hall.

“I was trying to make some sort of comparison between myself and Cynthia, and obviously that came out in a way that I apologize for,” Quinn said. “It came out in a way that has left people thinking or feeling that I was attacking Cynthia because of her sexual orientation, which is absolutely not my intent or what I meant to do.”

That being said, she stood by her criticism of Nixon, specifically the “unqualified” part.

“I do not apologize for saying that Cynthia Nixon is unqualified to be governor because she is unqualified to be governor,” Quinn continued.

While Quinn appreciated Nixon’s activism, she used that as a swipe to further her argument.

“She certainly participates in political rallies. I was with her at a fundraiser for marriage equality. I thank her for all of that,” Quinn added, “but going to rallies and speaking out at rallies is not the same thing as having run an organization, having run a part of government, having served in government.”
