Cleveland community activists took the big step today of bypassing prosecutors and asking a judge directly for murder charges in the case of Tamir Rice. Rice, you’ll recall, was the 12-year-old who was fatally shot by a Cleveland officer, and his death stirred up lots of anger and protests in the community.
This group of activists, according to CNN, filed citizens’ affidavits in the hope of getting charged officially filed soon against Frank Garmback and Timothy Loehmann. Community leaders have been frustrated at how long it’s taken for prosecutors to decide whether to file charges.
Rice’s family filed a wrongful death suit and in a recent report about how Rice’s death “shattered” the family, it was shown that his mother Samira Rice was getting frustrated with how long the official investigation has been taking.
