Cory Booker Responds to Gay Rumors in Washington Post Interview

Newark mayor and almost-guaranteed future New Jersey senator Cory Booker has done some dating, but he hasn’t settled down yet, leading to rumor-mongering in some circles that Booker might be gay. In a huge Washington Post profile about his rise to political prominence, Booker addresses the rumors head-on, and has an important question for anyone who thinks he might secretly be gay: “so what?”

Booker talks about his social media engagement, his admiration for Republicans Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, and the onslaught of liberal criticism he’s gotten in the last few years. But towards the end of the piece, Booker opens up a little about his love life.

The Newark mayor went into some detail about jumping into the dating pool after getting some unexpected advice from his pastor. He’s opted to keep his private life private, saying he doesn’t want to unfairly put any of the women he sees in the spotlight. But as for the gay rumors, Booker isn’t angered, but rather amused instead.

“And people who think I’m gay, some part of me thinks it’s wonderful. Because I want to challenge people on their homophobia. I love seeing on Twitter when someone says I’m gay, and I say, ‘So what does it matter if I am? So be it. I hope you are not voting for me because you are making the presumption that I’m straight.'”
