Dem Rep. Cummings Demands Secret Service Director ‘Has to Go’
Democratic congressman and House Oversight Committee ranking member Elijah Cummings has lost faith in Julia Pierson, the director of the Secret Service, after a series of embarrassing security lapses at the White House.
“I heard nothing yesterday that makes me feel the President is safe 24/7,” Cummings told Roland Martin this morning, referring to a closed-door session after a public hearing yesterday. “The president is not well served.”
“I think this lady has to go,” Cummings added, according to Crew of 42. “There has to be drastic changes.”
While he clarified on The Diane Rehn Show hours later that he was not officially calling for Pierson’s resignation, he was “not comfortable with her being in that position,” and added on Twitter that he was “not comfortable about the safety of the President of the United States of America.”
In the past few weeks, the White House has seen multiple fence jumpers, including one who managed to break into the East Room of the executive mansion. In addition, the Washington Post released numerous reports of further security lapses dating back to 2011, around the time that Pierson became the director of the Secret Service.
