Ex-NSA Head’s Off-the-Record Comments Criticizing White House Get Live Tweeted

If the epidemic of anonymous sources in Washington annoys you to no end, take this as a small victory. Former MoveOn.org director Tom Matzzie overheard former CIA/NSA head Michael Hayden trashing the White House and tweeted parts of the off-the-record conversation.

Matzzie was riding the Acela and overheard Hayden behind him giving quotes to the press but requesting that they quote him anonymously. Here’s a few tweets from Matzzie’s chronicling of the conversation.

But perhaps the icing on the cake came when, fifteen minutes after tweeting whether he had the nerve to get a picture with Hayden, he actually got one.

Matzzie said he spoke with Hayden as well, saying “he was a gentleman and we disagree.” Still, if you’re going to give off-the-record quotes to reporters, you might not want to do it sitting near bored people on Amtrak with easy internet access.
