Former TV Reporter Arrested After Trying to Pay Hitman to Kill His Uncle

A former TV reporter turned failed Senate candidate was arrested as part of a murder-for-hire scheme.

Thomas Kenneth “T.K.” Owens was charged on Friday after meeting up with a “hit man” at a local bar in Tennessee and paying him $500 to kill his uncle, local sheriff’s deputy Ernest “Ernie” Widby. According to the Johnson City Press, Owens brought a photograph and the home address of his intended victim to the bar with him.

Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes could not give information on motive, but did mention that Owens “was considering joining the ministry and had some type of spiritual disagreement with his uncle.”

Owens was a local TV reporter for WJHL-TV until 2004. After that, he was a school teacher and then a failed candidate for Tennessee’s Democratic Senate nomination in 2012.

This is not the first time Owens has come under serious legal fire. He faced charges in 2011 of soliciting oral sex from a 7-year-old girl.
