German Restaurant Takes Signed Trump Photo Down After Barrage of Yelp Complaints
After spending nearly ten years on their wall, a German restaurant in Brooklyn is taking down their autographed Donald Trump photo after it became the subject of negative reviews on Yelp.
Fred and Amber Urban opened Schnitzel Haus in 2007, and Brooklyn Daily reports that they were friends back then with Trump’s head of security. The mogul came by to wish the restaurant success in its infancy, and he sent the Urbans a signed picture of himself that hung inside the joint ever since.
Fast forward to 2016, Trump has undoubtedly drawn the ire of many people due to his repeated controversies, and the Urbans say that having the picture up has taken a toll on the restaurant. Reviews on Yelp are swarmed with commentary that concentrate more on Trump’s politics than the food.
“I just couldn’t stop thinking about me, a black man with plenty of Mexican friends, supporting a business that supports such a racists and disgusting person as he is,” said one reviewer picked up by NY Eater. “Imagine going to a place and they having a picture of Hitler just because he visited them at one point in time. Just not cool. Should be removed.”
The Urbans initially stood by the photo, but they decided to do away with it after their defense cost the restaurant time and money.
“When you’re hurting my income and taking food off my family’s table, we’re forced to make changes,” said Amber Urban. “Honestly, I was very upset. I don’t know how posting a picture on the wall is promoting hatred.”
