Live from the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City, the cast of the Broadway sensation Hamilton performed its opening number during the Grammys telecast Monday night. The cast was introduced by Late Show host and avid Broadway fan Stephen Colbert, and the performance was also being watched by a live audience who greeted star Lin-Manuel Miranda with rousing applause.
“This is a New York story. This is an American story. This is like nothing you have ever witnessed,” Colbert said.
Hamilton has made one of the most rapidly-growing Broadway debuts in history, with tickets to see the live performance nearly impossible to land. The recording of the soundtrack became the highest debuting ensemble album on the Billboard 200 chart in decades. Since the performance was so great, we can all be thankful that Miranda did not, in fact, pick up a book on Harry Truman all those years ago.
