Jeffrey Toobin on ‘Monumental’ Michael Cohen Guilty Plea: ‘He Implicated Donald Trump in a Federal Crime’

The conservative news aggregator Matt Drudge referred to it as “[President Donald] Trump Hell Hour.” But to CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin, one development during the stunning 4 P.M. news blitz stood above the rest.

“The thing that is of the most significance — and it is of immense significance — is that Michael Cohen implicated Donald Trump in a federal crime.”

The CNN legal analyst was referring to the comments made in open court by the president’s longtime lawyer and fixer — who pleaded guilty to 8 counts of bank fraud, tax evasion, and campaign finance violations. Cohen admitted to paying off Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal “at [the] direction” of Trump.

“This brings the scandal right to the door of the White House,” Toobin said.

So often, many analysts, including Toobin, have sought to compare modern happenings to events which took place during Watergate. But the CNN analyst said this particular Trump-related scandal has no Nixon-ian equal.

“That is, in and of itself something of such great significance that I don’t even think it has a parallel during watergate.”
