‘Nevertheless She Persisted’ Merchandise, Tattoos, and More Blow Up Online in Support of Warren

Yesterday, Hillary Clinton tweeted Mitch McConnell‘s words, which might seem weird to you. Now, a bunch of ostensibly progressive, feminist Etsy shops are selling mugs and shirts bearing his words and people are getting them tattooed on their bodies. Has the world gone mad?

Well, sort of, but no one is using McConnell’s words to praise him. See, when he prevented Elizabeth Warren from reading a letter from Coretta Scott King to oppose the nomination of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General on the Senate floor, he explained his decision by saying, “She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

Those words caught on.

Clinton tweeted the quote as did thousands of other people, some hashtagging #NeverthelessShePersisted while others simply went with #ShePersisted.

Some have already put their money where their Twitter fingers are.

The movement spawned merchandise.

There is perfume being sold as a fundraiser for Emily’s List, an organization that works to get pro-choice women elected in local and national races.

NARAL Pro-Choice America is giving away free stickers.

There are lots of shirts available, too. Here’s one that benefits the ACLU.

This one benefits the ACLU and Planned Parenthood.

NBC News 4 Washington is reporting that Etsy, the craft-based e-marketplace, is “awash” with shirts bearing the slogan.

If your Nasty Woman shirt is looking a little threadbare, now could be a good time to upgrade.
