Orlando Police Launch Manhunt After Cop Killed in Shooting

The hunt is on for a suspect in Orlando, Florida after a female police officer was murdered in front of a Walmart on Monday.

The Orlando Police Department has confirmed that Master Sgt. Debra Clayton attempted to approach Markeith Loyd at a shopping center before she was shot and killed. Another deputy sheriff attempted to pursue Loyd before he stole a car and fled the scene of the crime.

Loyd was known to authorities, as he was wanted for murdering his pregnant girlfriend last month. The police department confirmed the details of the murder during a press conference, and they also released photos of Clayton and Loyd.

Fifteen schools in the area have been put on lockdown as police continue a manhunt to bring Loyd into custody. Locals are being advised to avoid the area.

Earlier today, the department held a small ceremony outside of their building as they laid Clayton to rest.

UPDATE – 12:20 pm EST: NBC reports that a sheriff’s deputy riding a motorcycle died during the manhunt.
