The New York state lottery is famous for its catchphrase, “Hey you never know” meant to entice potential ticket-buyers into thinking that they have a chance at a once-in-a-lifetime windfall. But maybe a 46-year-old woman recently should have emphasized the “know” part of the phrase before spending a ton of money she didn’t have during a shopping spree.
The French mother and wife — who was not named by French authorities following her arrest — was so sure that she has won the lottery that she spend nearly $6,000 USD in bad checks in a single day. Her husband, ever astute that just maybe it wasn’t wise to make it rain fresh Euros all over French department stores, double-checked the ticket.
Unfortunately, our heroine was one digit off.
The best part of this story comes from the Toronto Sun who wrote, “Instead of coming clean, however, she burned her purse and told cops it had been stolen.”
So in short, please have your spouse (or your fellow employees like this poor unfortunate New Jersey restaurant) check your tickets before celebrating. Oh, and for those of you looking to play this weekend’s Powerball, your lucky numbers are 4,8,15,16,23 and 42.
