Rectified: 6 People Who Spent Many Years In Jail On Wrongful Convictions

 

In the Sundance Channel’s new original series, Rectify, a man is released from death row after 19 years of confinement on a technicality. Lead character Daniel Holden is released from jail for a rape/murder charge following nearly two decades on death row.

Upon returning to his hometown of Paulie, Georgia, Holden is faced with many challenges, including re-immersing himself into a community that has long changed since he last was home. Family members have grown up, technological advances have made life much different, the world undoubtedly looks familiar to someone who’s been staring at metal bars for two decades.

Holden’s story isn’t actually that far off from the post-exoneration life many others have faced. Below are just five of the many stories of people who were cleared of crimes after a long stint in prison, who subsequently faced the challenges of readjusting to normal life:
