Reports: U.S. Warships Accompany Israeli Ship Through Suez Canal
Israel’s largest newspaper, Haaretz recently released a report that American warships, including the Aircraft Carrier USS Truman, had crossed through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea and upset some Egyptian opposition groups. Now, there are concerns in the Middle East that the presence of American ships could lead to a confrontation with Iran.
The Haaretz report, channeling reports from Arabic sources, states that the American fleet was one of the largest seen in the area in years:
“More than twelve United States Naval warships and at least one Israeli ship crossed the Suez Canal towards the Red Sea on Friday, British Arabic Language newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported Saturday.
According to the report, thousands of Egyptian soldiers were deployed along the Suez Canal guarding the ships’ passage, which included a U.S. aircraft carrier.
According to eyewitnesses, the U.S. battleships were the largest to have crossed the Canal in many years, Al-Quds reported.”
UPI also reports of the dissent in Egypt over allowing the ships to pass:
“Leaders of Egyptian opposition parties criticized the government for allowing the fleet passage. A copy of an 1888 treaty posted on the Egyptian government’s Web site states the canal is to be open to warships of any nation at all times.”
